The Pau Brasil tree is very important to Brasil—it gave the country its name and was once used for its red dye and strong wood. But over the centuries, the tree was heavily cut down for trade and to clear land, especially during colonisation. 

Today, it’s endangered because much of its natural forest has been destroyed, and very few trees remain in the wild.
