This painting depicts the beginning of Carnival in Brasil, between the 18th and 19th centuries, when the celebration was restricted to high society, in a period marked by slavery.

By reframing this historical narrative, the painting presents a black woman as the central figure, symbolising a more inclusive Carnival, one of resistance and freedom.
