This painting represents the Jenipapo fruit, created using natural inks from coffee, saffron, spinach, redcurrant, and watercolour pencil.

The fruit contains genipin, a substance that turns dark blue or black upon exposure to air, traditionally used for body painting in rituals and ceremonies.

In the Tupi-Guarani language, “jenipapo” means “fruit that stains,” reflecting its use in cultural expressions. Beyond its symbolic value, Jenipapo is utilized in traditional medicine and is integral to regional economies, especially in Bahia, where it’s used to produce liqueurs and sweets for festivals like the Feast of Saint John.
